Some grammar traditionalists may balk at this usage, but the American Dialect Society has named ‘they’ used as a singular pronoun as their coveted ‘word of the year.’ ‘They’ as a singular pronoun allows us to move away from defining our subject’s gender along a limiting binary. In fact, it removes the necessity to define gender at all.
